Windy & Coastal
Plants for Seaside, Coastal and Windswept Areas with Salty Air
These plants we have found popular as although they cope well in coastal areas they also work well in exposed windy areas and not all plants will be suitable in such conditions.
The Himalyan Birch grows well on mountainsides and works very well in exposed windy areas as well as many of the pines such as the stone pine and cedars such as Cedrus Atlantica Glauca.
For hedges on windy sites Hollies are good plants. Even palms such as the Chaemerops Humilis and the Trachycarpus Wagnerianus cope well with dry conditions and their leaves will not shred if wind-battered. For flowering shrubs Hydrangeas are hard to surpass for thriving in coastal areas and virtually all Grasses especially the Phormiums will thrive by the seaside.
