Acer Rubrum Red Sunset or Canadian Maple Red Sunset also the Red Maple is a large maple tree. The Red Sunset variety is an upright growth habit and form with particularly good red autumn colour. Striking and elegant, this free-growing, large deciduous tree is sold as a multi-stem tree.
For the better part of the year, the three-lobed leaves of the Red Maple are a deep shade of green. In the beginning of the autumn, earlier than any of its close relatives such as the Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum, this maple’s foliage turns to vivid shades of bright crimson red. However, the red foliage is not the only thing that influenced the name. In addition to the autumn colour of the leaves, the flower, fruits and young growth of this tree are also in various shades of this colour. The red flowers, borne in clusters, appear in the spring and are followed by the recognizable two-winged samara fruit.
Acer Rubrum Red Sunset is easy to grow and to care for. This cultivar will thrive in almost any moist but well-drained soil, and in both full sun and partial shade. To ensure best results and encourage bright colour of the foliage, choose a sheltered, sunny location in the garden.
Bred in the United States, this cultivar is fully hardy in the United Kingdom, and will tolerate temperatures to 20 degrees below zero.
