Osmanthus X Burkwoodii or Burkwood Osmanthus is a slow growing evergreen shrub with dark green leathery ovate shaped leaves that are 3-5cm long. This beautiful specimen makes a stunning dense hedge that has clusters of small white scented flowers, followed by blue-black fruits in late summer or autumn.
Osmanthus Burkwoodii will grow into quite a large shrub reaching a max height of 3-5m and max spread of 3-4m. It grows well in any well drained moist fertile soil and likes either full sun partial shade.
Generally considered robust, Osmanthus Burkwoodii is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. It can withstand temperatures up to -15 degrees, and doesn’t mind frost. Although this cultivar won’t appreciate an exposed location in areas with strong, biting winds, its resilience to the elements is much greater than other plants from the Oleaceae family this shrub belongs to. Burkwood Osmanthus is also a recipient of the renowned Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural society, which is a sign of its good constitution and great performance in most gardens.
With a dense, bushy habit, this rounded shrub with white, scented flowers, is an ideal plant for dimly lit corners of the garden, or as a backdrop for colourful, flowering shrubs. The dense, glossy, leathery foliage of this shrub makes it perfectly suited for hedges with multiple seasons of interest. As it requires little to no pruning to stay in perfect shape, and it’s generally pest and disease free, Burkwood Osmanthus is a great candidate for a highly decorative, low-maintenance hedge.
With a year-round interest from evergreen foliage and clusters of white, heavily fragranced blossoms, this cultivar is a great choice for mixed shrub borders and hedges. Make sure to take a look at other Osmanthus varieties we have available for sale, or our selection of quality hedging plants.
