Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam, or the Rotterdam Sycamore, is a cultivar of Acer Pseudoplatanus Sycamore tree. Rotterdam is particularly well-suited to a variety of difficult growing conditions, including in windy coastal sites as well as inner cities.
Acer Pseudoplatanus is native to central Europe and southwestern Asia, and has been popular in the UK since the eighteenth century. Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam was discovered in the Netherlands in 1944, and is an excellent landscape tree with attractive foliage. Its dark green leaves, shaped similarly to maple leaves, turn an attractive yellow in autumn. Small yellow-green flowers are produced in pendulous racemes in spring, attracting bees and butterflies. Later, winged fruits or samaras develop.
Fully hardy in even the most severe UK climates, Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam will grow to a mature height of 20-25 metres and spread of 10 metres in 20 to 50 years. Sycamores are a long-lived species, with some specimens in the UK that are over 400 years old, so you can count on your Rotterdam Sycamore surviving for many generations to come. Little pruning is necessary to maintain its dense, pyramidal crown, which will change to a vase-shaped shape as the tree matures. If planting in a row or as a group, space trees 9-12 metres apart.
Plant Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. This cultivar is especially resistant to wind, and very tolerant of salt spray, making it perfect for coastal regions. As well, it is highly tolerant of pollution, so it is an excellent choice for city locations. The deep roots of the Rotterdam Sycamore make it ideal for use on banks or slopes to halt erosion.
Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam is a large and stately tree which can be used either as a single specimen, or in larger numbers for a greater effect. One Rotterdam Sycamore planted in a large lawn will provide deep shade beneath its dense canopy, as well as giving the property a strong focal point, especially in autumn when the leaves turn golden yellow. A row of Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam trees will make an effective windbreak, even in very windy areas.
If you are looking for a long-lived, low-maintenance foliage tree, Acer Pseudoplatanus Rotterdam is ideal. This large, hardy Sycamore cultivar will grow in undemanding conditions and last for many generations to come!
