Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia, or the Negenia Sycamore, is a tough tree well-suited to urban locations. This reliable foliage tree will provide shade and structure in your landscape.
Acer Pseudoplatanus or the Sycamore is native to central Europe and southwestern Asia, and has been grown widely across the UK since the eighteenth century. The cultivar Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia was developed in the Netherlands in 1948, and has become a very popular street tree since then. A large deciduous tree, Negenia has dark green leaves on red stalks, similar in shape to maple leaves, which turn to a yellow-brown in autumn. The insignificant racemes of pendulous yellow-green flowers which appear in April will attract bees and butterflies to your garden, and are followed by winged fruits or samara.
Fully hardy even in severe climates, Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia will grow to a mature height of 15-25 metres and spread of 10-20 metres in 50 years. Acer Pseudoplatanus has a very long life-span, with some specimens recorded at over 400 years. Little or no pruning is required as the Negenia Sycamore develops its dense, wide pyramidal crown. Space trees 9-12 metres apart. Plant Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. The Negenia Sycamore is an excellent tree for planting in coastal regions, as it withstands windy conditions and has a high tolerance for salt spray. It is also very tolerant of pollution, so will thrive in a city location. One caution is that the fruit or samara of sycamores are poisonous to horses, so Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia should not be planted in close proximity to horses.
Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia is a magnificent large tree which will make a big impact whether planted as a single specimen or in a grouping. One tree in a large lawn will provide good shade. They are also very popular as avenue trees in cities or the country. In coastal regions, they make an excellent windbreak. A grouping of these stately trees on a large property would grow to be a stand-out in the landscape, and create a shady space beneath them.
Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia is a tough, versatile landscape tree which will thrive in all areas, from inner cities to windy seacoasts. Whether planted as a single specimen or as a row lining an avenue, this large, stately tree will be an asset to your landscape for many years to come!
