Nordmann Fir Christmas Trees are also known as Abies Nordmanniana. These bushy, dark green specimens are supplied as rootballs. Nordmann's are fabulous pine trees with superb shapes. We stock these large mature pines all year round. The Nordmann Fir Tree is considered the original Christmas Tree. It has an interesting history and lineage back to its native countries of Turkey, Georgia, Russia, and Armenia. Also known as a Caucasian Fir, the Abies Nordmanniana can grow to tremendous heights, often taller than 12 metres. Its ultimate spread is 4-8 metres and is very long lived, reaching its ultimate size in 25-50 years. Its parentage, Pinaceae Family and Abies Genus are evergreen conifers with branches arranged in a whorl, bearing flattened, linear leaves which will often be whitish on their undersides. On the upper branches, they will bear large cones which break up while still attached to the tree.
The Abies normanniana or Nordmann Fir is an evergreen with a narrow columnar crown. Its foliage is dense with a glossy dark green hue, with branches that tend to sweep downward. Its young cones are reddish but mature to brown. Its needles are not sharp and the tree holds them well, making it a premiere choice as a Christmas Tree. Named after a Finnish explorer, Alexander von Nordmann, its further identification as a Caucasian Fir stems from him discovering it in the Caucasian Mountains as then an unnamed tree species.
Popular as an ornamental tree in various locations, parks, and large gardens, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden of Merit for its widespread popularity and majestic beauty while also recognized for its ability to add a touch of style to virtually any ornamental setting or garden.
The Nordmann Fir can be grown in wet, dry, and shady areas. It is hardy to Zone H7 in the UK, prefers full sun with Aspects from South to North, and West to East. It prefers sheltered exposures. It can grow in a wide range of soils as long as they are well drained internally but hold their moisture well.
Abies Nordmanniana is considered a low maintenance tree. Every yard, garden, open space, or sheltered setting will be beautified by this lovely fir. The soft needles and unique colouring will add a sense of character and colour blend into the landscape like few other conifers can.
