Italian Cypress Trees - Latin name Cupressus Sempervirens is also sometimes known as the Mediterranean Cypress or the Tuscan Cypress tree.
No other tree epitomises the Tuscan landscape in quite the same way as this tall, narrow coniferous tree. Its pencil shape is often used in Italianate garden design and in formal gardens around the world.
Cupressus Sempervirens is a beautiful evergreen upright conifer that is easy to grow in our UK climate. It is hardy and tolerates all conditions. You can grow it as a specimen tree in its own right or if a group are grown alongside each other, it makes for an extremely effective, yet very elegant evergreen screen. Native to the Mediterranean, Cupressus Sempervirens has been grown in the UK since before 1600. Its tall, slender columnar shape makes it a stand-out in a landscape plan. It requires little or no pruning to maintain its attractive narrow silhouette.
Plant your Cupressus Sempervirens in full sun in a position sheltered from cold winter winds. It will do well in any moist, well-drained soil, and once established will tolerate dry periods. Tolerant of both salt and urban pollution, Mediterranean Cypress is an excellent choice for both coastal and city plantings. As well, it is deer resistant, and therefore will make a good tree for country gardens!
Because of its narrow width, Cupressus Sempervirens fits beautifully into the limited confines of a courtyard garden, where its evergreen foliage will provide year-round interest. Whether planted as a single specimen tree, or as part of a row along an avenue or bordering a formal garden, Mediterranean Cypress strikes an elegant note in your landscape!
