Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana or Dwarf Hinoki Cypress Tree
Here’s a unique creative garden species that any beginner can grow. The Hinoki Cypress Tree is a dwarf variety of the Chamaecyparis Obtusa conifer which makes a unique, irregular globe shaped bush specimen which will eventually become more pyramidical with twisted sprays of rich, dark, green foliage. Not a tall grower, their ultimate height will reach 90 cm and spread to about 60cm. Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana is considered a good rockery conifer. A member of the Cupressaceae Family and Chamaecyparis Genus, the Hinoki Cypress is yet another recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is ideal for a small garden, but can also be maintained beautifully in pots or other containers for several years before asking to be placed out in the garden. Its slow growth habit keeps its position for many years wherever you place it so growing other plants around it that can blend with its distinct yellow colouring can be very complementary.
All the subspecies of the Hinoki Cypress are evergreen shrubs or trees with characteristic yellow-green foliage. They make nice screens or hedges, and can cope with virtually any weather our UK climate can throw at her. Be aware that it can also be irritating to the skin, and cause toxic reactions when ingested. This slow grower will take many years to reach its ultimate height of only 1.3 metres and its spread in that time will reach 1.0 metres; but that is part of its unique beauty and suitability to several garden positions. Its flower fragrance is inconspicuous and neutral. It flowers in late spring.
Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana prefers acidic soils to neutral pH’s. Its hardiness zone range is from H4-H8 in the UK and can tolerate winter temperatures well below 0oC. It likes well drained soils that are frequently watered, especially during its first few years of growth in your garden. It prefers full sun. It tolerates full exposure but does well in sheltered environments as well.
So if you’re in search of a nice dwarf conifer that maintains colour in the garden throughout the year; is not terribly picky for pruning and shaping; has good exposure to sunlight; and likes acidic soil environments; this could be the one.
