Thuja Plicata Martin is also known as the Western Red Cedar. Thuja is part of the cypress family and is known as a fast growing evergreen conifer tree. Our Thuja Plicata Hedging plants are supplied as root balled (e.g. without a pot). The roots are protected and wrapped in a biodegradable hessian sack. As a result, we can offer these evergreen hedging conifers at an excellent price for our customers.
Height At Maturity
Thuya Plicata 'Atrovirens' is a particular variety of Thuja which is a large-size variety that will reach 15-25m in height at maturity. This variety retains a relatively slender shape with a diameter of up to 4 meters wide. This aspect is particularly useful for hedging purposes where a lush, dense screen is needed. The evergreen foliage of Thuja Plicata is a dense, mid-green in colour, which becomes tinged with an attractive bronze during the winter months.
Privacy Screening
Thuja Plicata Atrovirensis a very popular choice for privacy screening hedging, partly due to its ability to renew itself after trimming or cutting back. Other varieties of fast growing hedging, for example Cupressus Leylandii, can develop dead foliage at their centre (especially when they are not regularly trimmed) which won’t renew itself easily. Thuja Plicata conversely, will regrow happily after being cut back and still remain a lovely verdant green hedge.
Hardy, Easy To Grow, Low Maintenance
Thuja Plicata or Western Red Cedar (named for its red bark) is native to Pacific North America and grows well in the UK climate - easy to grow and with low maintenance. A trim at the beginning of the Spring to keep in shape is usually enough to last the year. If necessary, give another trim in autumn (don't leave it too late in the year for the last cut). Although a fast growing hedge it doesn't need as much managing as Leylandii. Thuja Plicata atrovirens has unusually fragrant foliage, when you brush past the trees or when you trim the leaves, there is a lovely scent of pineapple from the bright green foliage. A very attractive and practical hedge plant 'Atrovirens' is also an impressive specimen tree for small to medium sized gardens.
Another excellent variety of Thuja (sometimes spelled Thuya) that is especially useful for hedging, is Thuja Occidentalis Brabant.
