First introduced to the UK in 1842, Cryptomeria Japonica has been cultivated in Japan for hundreds of years. This dwarf variety is especially versatile. Its short leaves are arranged around the branches in a distinctive spiral pattern, and the bush forms a soft, dense dome shape. New growth in the spring is a light green before becoming dark green in spring and summer. The winter foliage takes on a bronze hue.
Hardy in all regions of the UK and northern Europe, Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana grows over a period of 10 to 20 years to an eventual height and spread of 1.4 metres, so the extra large cryptomeria shrubs available for sale at our plant centre and our online shop are full sized. No pruning is required to maintain its attractive form, making it an ideal low-maintenance landscape plant. For a mass planting or hedge, space plants 1 metre apart.
Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana will grow best in full sun or part shade in a sheltered spot with a south, west or east-facing aspect. It needs protection from cold winter winds. It prefers moist, well-drained rich soil with an acid to neutral ph. Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana is pest and disease free.
You have many options when it comes to using Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana in your garden. Because of its slow growth and eventual small size, it makes an excellent container plant for inclusion on a rooftop terrace or patio, or in a courtyard. Its dense growth and neat domed shape make it a natural choice for a traditional foundation planting, where it will never grow too big for its location. Planted along a walkway or on either side of a door, Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana will give year-round definition and reliable colour. It also works well as a specimen plant in a rock or oriental garden, where its interesting texture will be a highlight. Included in a mixed border, it will be a good backdrop for flowering plants in season, and then in winter provide its own interest with its bronzed foliage.
Cryptomeria Japonica Globosa Nana is a low-maintenance evergreen beauty with high rewards for the UK gardener. Whether in a mass planting or as a specimen plant, this dwarf conifer has much to offer!
