Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy Western Red Cedar
Thuja Plicata evergreen conifers are species best known for their resemblance to Cedar trees, hence the common name Western Red Cedar. These trees are native to the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska all the way down to California, which certainly contributed to their hardiness and adaptability.
The variety Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy is a relatively new cultivar, found in a Dutch nursery by Andreas J.M. Luiten in 2002. A natural mutation of Thuja Plicata Martin, this conifer has an upright, pyramidal habit and beautiful golden scale-like foliage. While some Golden Foliage varieties can loose their colour in the summer heat, 4ever Goldy foliage does not fade over summer & remains a stunning gold all year round - hence the name forever goldy.
In the winter, the colour is embellished with a warm orange-reddish hue. Planting 4ever Goldy in full sun gives the best foliage colour.
Height and Spread of Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy
With an average growth rate, Western Red Cedar 4ever Goldy can achieve a maximum height of 2 to 5 metres with a spread of 1 to 2 metres.
How Hardy is Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy
Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, Western Red Cedar 4ever Goldy is also disease resistant and is more drought-tolerant than the Northern White Cedar varieties.
How To Use Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy
Thanks to its showy evergreen foliage and elegant natural shape, Western Red Cedar 4ever Goldy is ideally suited to be grown as an evergreen screening hedge. The dense foliage will provide privacy and interest both, both during the year when it is vibrant gold, and when the temperatures drop and gold turns to an orange-reddish hue.
How To Care For Thuja Plicata 4ever Goldy
For Western Red Cedar 4ever Goldy to thrive, plant it in full sun. This will also bring out the best foliage colour. The soil should be moist but well-drained, with a pH value that’s neutral to slightly acidic.
