Whether grown as a container specimen or in the garden, this small and fiery evergreen will fit right in!
Native to eastern North America, White Cedars have long been a favourite for landscaping, and this new sport of the Rheingold variety has many qualities that particularly recommend it. Its soft, fine-textured sage-green foliage is unique for its colourful tips, which change from gold in spring to a soft, bronze-red in summer and finally bright red in autumn and winter, bringing a vivid colour to the winter garden.
Hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, Thuja occidentalis Fire Chief will grow to a height and spread of 60 cm in a few years, eventually reaching a mature size of 1.2 metres. It grows into a perfect globe shape without any pruning, but will respond well if you wish to clip it to maintain a smaller size. Space plants 1.2 - 1.5 m apart for a low growing hedge or in a grouping.
For best colour, plant your Thuja occidentalis Congabe in full sun in acid to neutral moist but well-drained soil, with some protection from drying winter winds. Once established it can tolerate dry conditions. Pest and disease-free, it is very low-maintenance. Tolerant of pollution, Thuja occidentalis Fire Chief is perfect for small city gardens. Susceptible to deer, rabbits and salt, more care should be taken in coastal and country gardens.
With its small size, attractive globe shape, and year-round red foliage, Thuja occidentalis Fire Chief is a great choice when there is limited room. Planted in a container on a roof terrace, in a courtyard or on a patio, this conifer will provide winter interest as well as a reliable backdrop for flowers in season. Towards the back of a mixed border or as a foundation planting, it will never grow out of bounds, while at the same time giving a welcome flash of colour. Thuja occidentalis Congabe also makes an excellent hedge which will never need pruning!
Extremely hardy, low-maintenance and brilliantly coloured, Thuja occidentalis Fire Chief will never fail to light up your garden! Other low gorwing or dwarf Thujas include Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana Conifer and Thuja Occidentalis Tiny Tim.
