Cortaderia selloana Rosea, also known as Pink Pampas Grass, is a hardy ornamental grass with spectacular flowers which will bring a late-season wow factor to your garden!
Native to the grassy plains of the temperate region of South America, Cortaderia selloana Rosea will be virtually indestructible in your UK garden. It will grow into a dense clump of arching narrow green leaves which will persist through the winter. In late summer the tall spikes of silky pink flowers shoot up to more than a metre in height, creating a spectacular show which will last well into the New Year. Pink pampas grass’s dramatic spikes are also very desirable cut flowers, especially in dried arrangements.
Cortaderia selloana Rosea is reliably winter hardy throughout most of the UK. After 2 to 5 years the plant will have reached its mature height of 1-1.5 metres and spread of .5-1 metre. In late winter cut out last year’s flower stems and any dead foliage. It is also possible to cut all leaves back to the base to rejuvenate the plant and ensure continued vigorous growth. Plants can be propagated by division in late winter. If planting in a group, space plants a metre apart.
Plant your pink pampas grass in full sun, with a south or east-facing aspect, in a sheltered or exposed location. Cortaderia selloana Rosea will thrive in any fertile well-drained soil. Once established it is extremely resistant to drought, and pest and disease free. It is also tolerant to salt, so it is a good choice for planting in a coastal garden.
Cortaderia selloana Rosea will make an excellent specimen plant for a medium-sized or large garden. Its large size and magnificent flowers, as well as its evergreen leaves, would make it a good courtyard planting for year-round interest. At the back of a mixed border it would add height and reliable foliage until the flower spikes provide their own display. A row of these show-stoppers would provide a dense screen and an even more stunning massed display of blooms in late summer, autumn, and winter. On a larger country property, a mass planting of Cortaderia selloana Rosea is a great option for a dry, open area where a ground cover is needed.
Cortaderia selloana Rosea has long been a feature in UK gardens, and with good reason. Its reliable evergreen foliage and dramatic flower spikes create a spectacular show like no other!
