The pleached form of the crown will add a strong architectural statement to your landscape! Read our blog on Pleached Tree Care & How To Plant Pleached Tree
Developed in the 1950’s in Canada and named after the red-nosed Reindeer, Malus Rudolph provides a long season of interest, making it a hard-working part of even the smallest garden space, where the pleached form makes it even easier to fit in. In April and May the bare branches of this pleached crab apple tree are covered with gorgeous red-pink flowers or apple blossom. The leaves that unfurl soon after are a striking bronze-red, maturing to bronze-green in summer before turning a bright yellow in autumn, accompanied by the fruits which ripen to a glossy orange-red and if not picked by you or eaten by the birds, will persist into the winter months after the leaves have fallen.
This Canadian tree is extremely tough, hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. The pleached form of Crab Apple Rudolph is achieved by pruning and training the young trees to create a narrow, square crown atop a straight, clear stem. By the time our root-balled Pleached Malus Rudolph arrives in your garden, they require only a light pruning once or twice a year to maintain their distinctive shape. You can plant your Crab Apple Rudolph in any soil except waterlogged in sun or part shade in an exposed or sheltered position. As these trees are boot-balled, you do not need to remove the protective hessian sacking – this is biodegradable and will disintegrate naturally over time. Extremely tolerant of pollution, this is an excellent tree for city gardens. Moderately tolerant of salt, Pleached Malus Rudolph can also be used in coastal regions, but in country gardens needs to have some protection from rabbits.
The stunning flowers, attractive foliage and architectural form of these Pleached Malus Rudolph Crab Apple tree makes it an excellent choice for creating a living fence in small gardens, as it takes up little space. Planted along a low wall, a row of pleached crab apple trees will provide a high privacy screen with the added benefit of its blooms, leaves and fruit. On a rooftop terrace or in a courtyard, the year-round visual interest of the pleached trees will never fail to delight. In a larger formal garden, a row of Pleached Malus Rudolph lining a walkway will create an interesting effect.
