Acer Palmatum are known as Japanese Maples and they are very popular in the UK. Sumi Nagashi is a mid-sized ornamental cultivar. It belongs to the Matsumurae group of Japanese Maple meaning that the leaf lobes are very deeply divided. Sumi Nagashi’s divided foliage is large, measuring up to 10 cms in length with 7 lobes that are separated almost to the stalk with pointed tips and rough teeth. They emerge bright purple-red and mature to a deep red burgundy over the summer. Small yellowy-white flowers appear in spring followed by winged seeds in autumn and another bright red autumnal foliage display.
This is a medium tree with an upright growth habit that’s perfect for landscaping and larger spaces.

How To Care For Acer Palmatum Sumi Nagashi
Acer Palmatum Sumi Nagashi likes well-drained acid to neutral soil in partial shade. When grown in partial shade the leaf colour is best, but it will tolerate full sun as well. To avoid wind scorch and foliage damage, it’s best to plant it in a sheltered spot protected from drying winds.
Regular pruning is not necessary but wait until the dormant winter months before removing any damaged or crossed branches.
Water well until established and during hot spells to prevent leaf scorch, and apply a thick layer of mulch to the base each spring.
