Thuja Smaragd or White Cedar Smaragd. Supplied as Root Ball.
Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd is a most attractive variety of Thuja. Growing more slowly (width-wise) than other varieties of Thuja, Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd has an upright conical habit and produces erect sprays of charming bright green foliage even in winter. The foliage is aromatic.
Over recent years, Thuja conifers are becoming increasingly acknowledged as excellent hedging conifers that are well suited to our climate here in Britain and Ireland. They are evergreen, fast-growing, naturally conical shaped trees with small, fragrant leaves.
The variety Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd has many common names including White Cedar Smaragd or White Cedar Emerald. It can also be referred to as Thuja Occidentalis Emerald. As the name suggests, its foliage has a beautiful, emerald hue (smaragd meaning emerald in German).
Thuja Smaragd trees have a dense growing habit and aromatic green foliage. The foliage lends itself very well to trimming, where required. Grown as a stand-alone specimen tree or pair of trees, Smaragd is a narrow, shapely and elegant conifer with its beautiful conical shape.
White Cedar Smaragd is an ideal conifer for hedging. If you are looking for instant impact in your garden or landscape, the more mature Thuja Smaragd trees standing at 2.75 metres tall are excellent value!
There are many advantages to having a Thuja Occidentalis Emerald hedge. Smaragd is colour resistant in winter, meaning that it retains its colour during the winter months and is not susceptible to browning of the needles.
Relatively little cutting & shaping is required. Thuja Smaragd is particularly dense and columnar. Its narrow stature means that unlike most other hedging plants, it needs relatively little pruning, even over many years. This is because Thuja Smaragd grows slowly width-wise. In height on the other hand, White Cedar Emerald has a normal growth rate. Perfect characteristics for hedging!
Thuja Smaragd grows well in full sun on rich soil that drains well. Fully hardy. Max height in 20 years 3-4 metres.
For many seasoned gardeners, Thuja 'Smaragd' is often considered the most beautiful and most recommendable of the Thuja varieties. But as it is slower growing, it tends to be more expensive than its related Thuja Occidentalis Brabant or Thuja Plicata Martin.
We aim to have a size in stock for every budget. As these hedging plants are root balled, we are able to offer even better value.
