Winner of the 2015 Plantarium Gold Medal, this versatile evergreen plant can be used as a single specimen or as a hedge. As with all Photinia, Pink Crispy is a vigorous grower with vivid red stems & new growth in spring is a stunning bright pink.
Photinia serratifolia is native to south-east Asia, and has long been a popular hedging shrub for UK gardeners. Photinia Pink Crispy, a new variety bred in the Netherlands, is unique due to its supberb marbled evergreen foliage splashed with blotches of light and dark green, creating a slightly crispy effect. The red stems create an effective contrast, and the new growth each spring is a stunning bright pink, making for a brilliant show. In late spring and early summer, flat panicles of small white flowers emerge, followed by red berries which persist into the winter.
Hardy through most parts of the UK, Photinia serratifolia Pink Crispy will grow to a mature height of 1.8 metres and spread of 1 metre in 10 to 20 years. Prune to remove dead or damaged branches in early spring. If desired, it can be pruned back hard to maintain a smaller form. For a dense hedge, space plants 75 cm apart.
Grow Photinia serratifolia Pink Crispy in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position in moist but well-drained clay, loam or sand soil with an acid or neutral pH. It is not particularly salt-tolerant, so should be shielded from sea winds in coastal areas. However, it has a high tolerance for pollution, so will do well in city gardens. Deer might graze on Photinia serratifolia Pink Crispy, so gardeners should protect young plants in country locations.
Photinia serratifolia Pink Crispy is a suitable container specimen plant where its spring show of bright pink fresh growth will be a welcome pop of colour, and its evergreen marbled foliage and autumn/winter berries will provide year-round interest. Planted at the back of a mixed border, it will create a textural backdrop for flowering plants all season. Like all Photinia serratifolia, this new variety makes an excellent dense privacy hedge.
Use Photinia serratifolia Pink Crispy in your garden for either a brilliant highlight as a specimen plant, or in a mass or hedge planting for a reliable year-round source of colour and privacy. Either way, this new variety of an old favourite is sure to please!
