Photinia Fraseri Mandarino
This is a new variety of the hardy evergreen hedging plant photinia, which will add beauty to your garden year-round. Photinia are native to the Himalayas and bring their hardy evergreen growth habit here to the UK. The small white flowers appear in trusses in the mid-spring, followed by red berries maturing in the autumn, which are very attractive to birds. The new foliage growth in the spring emerges as a beautiful dark orange-red, maturing to small, glossy dark green rounded leaves which remain throughout the winter, with dark-red stems providing a lovely contrast. These Photinia Mandarino plants have been trained along a trellis or bamboo frame and are ideal for growing against a sunny wall. As they have been trained in the manner of climbing plants, they take up very little lateral space.
Winter-hardy in most parts of the UK, even in severe winters, Photinia Fraseri Mandarino will grow slowly to a height and spread of 1.5 metres after 20 years. If being planted as a hedge, space plants at 30-50 cm intervals, and trim twice a year to maintain their shape. If grown as a specimen shrub, little pruning will be necessary.
Plant your Photinia Fraseri Mandarino in full sun or partial shade, with any aspect, in a sheltered or exposed condition, although it might benefit from some protection from wind. It will grow best in a neutral to acid soil, in moist but well-drained clay, loam or sand.
Photinia Fraseri Mandarino makes an excellent hedging plant, with its dense growth habit and eventual height of 1.5 metres providing good privacy as well as interest with the changing colours of the evergreen foliage, spring flowers, and autumn and winter berries. A Photinia Mandarino also would make a lovely specimen plant in a small garden where its visual interest would be welcome. Planted against a wall, it would stand out as a garden star.
This new variety of photinia will bring vibrant colour to your garden with its new growth in spring and bright berries in the autumn and winter, as well as being a reliable evergreen foliage plant for year-round interest. Whether you plant a row as a hedge against a wall, or one as a specimen plant, Photinia Fraseri Mandarino will liven up your garden!
