Portuguese Laurel - botanical name Prunus Lusitanica, is a fabulous choice for evergreen screening. These quality plants have been grown as rootballs - grown in the ground to their current size and then lifted for sale. This is a very cost effective way to grow these hedging plants and we're pleased to pass on these savings to our customers. The Root Ball Season usually runs from November to March each year.
Portuguese Laurel has beautiful glossy green leaves that are spearhead shaped with a lightly serrated edge. The new growth has a deep crimson red colour and overall these bushes are most attractive. Portuguese Laurel has hugely grown in popularity due to it's density of foliage and its relatively fast growth. These plants provide a fabulous evergreen screen and give instant privacy. They grow at a rate of 20-30cm per year and will reach an ultimate height upwards of 4m if not pruned.
Prunus Lusitanica positively thrives on being cut and pruned, although, if you leave the pruning until after midsummer you'll be rewarded with a haze of flowers. These are creamy yellow in colour with stamens that give the blooms a lovely fuzzy appearance. The perfume is heady and gives a clue to it's close relative - the Hawthorn. The flowers of Prunus Lusitanica are followed by a mass of black berries which look pretty and are loved by birds.
Easily grown, Portugese Laurel ticks all the boxes for hedging, it will grow in almost any aspect. These are excellent quality hedging plants and we have a good range of sizes, suitable for most situations, in particular for instant screening.
Prunus Lusitanica or Portuguese Laurel has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit always a sign that it will perform really well in UK gardens.
