Photinia Red Robin Root Ball plants for Hedging – Available November to February
Fast-growing with dense, evergreen foliage Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin (to give it its full botanical name) is a great candidate for hedging. Easy to grow and to care for, this striking cultivar is sold as a root ball plant, making it ideal for mass planting. Our Photinia Root Ball plants are already semi-mature, so in addition to getting great value for your money, you’ll have an impressive hedge in no time.
Photinia Hedging Plants are prized for their unusual and lush foliage. The evergreen leaves start out reddish-orange, maturing to a deep bronze shade, before they finally turn to rich green tones. With new red growth every spring, this eye-catching shrub always has a multi-coloured foliage which looks particularly striking in a hedge.
A New Zealand native, Photinia Hedging Plants are fully hardy in all of the United Kingdom. A sturdy plant, Photinia can withstand temperatures up to 10 degrees below zero. Its tolerance of low winter temperatures comes in handy, since Photinia Root Ball is only available during its dormant season, which is November through to end of February. The reason for the relatively short dormant period compared to some other root ball hedging is because Photinia is sensitive as a root ball and must be completely dormant. In case you’re not able to plant our Photinia root balls within a few days of delivery, it would be best to protect the roots with an old blanket until you are ready to plant them.
While these particular root ball specimens are already quite mature, a fully established Photinia hedge can grow to be up to 4 metres and 2 metres wide. Quite happy to be clipped and shaped, you can easily keep your hedge trimmed to your own preference. Each Photinia Root Ball plant comes with a biodegradable hessian sack and a wire mesh protecting its root system, neither of which should be removed before planting. The wrapping will protect the tender roots and safely decompose into the soil with time. To help ensure your Photinia Red Robin Root Ball survives the winter planting, apply mulch after planting and water thoroughly. With adequate soil moisture and a spot in sun or dappled shade, you will have a beautiful dense evergreen hedge in no time.
With an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society and highly-decorative features, Photinia Red Robin is one of the most popular hedging plants we offer. As a root ball, Photinia is particularly easy to plant en masse, allowing you to create a breathtaking hedge almost instantly.
We also sell Photinia Red Robin as a screening tree (Photinia Full Standard Tree) and as topiary (Photinia Red Robin 3/4 Standard Topiary). We also have Photinia Red Robin hedging plants in pots which can be planted all year round.
