It’s a good choice for prairie planting, mixed sunny border and wildlife-friendly gardens.
Miscanthus Sinensis Red Chief is native to China and there are many varieties suitable for UK gardens. The cultivar Red Chief, also known as Eulalia Red Chief, is named for its red feathery flower panicles. These flowers arrive in summer opening in a flush of deep red before maturing to silver. It blooms throughout summer, so there’s always a mix of red and silver atop its long, arching green foliage.
This is a lovely choice for dry, sunny flower borders and a must in foliage gardens or prarie planting. Its clump of arching green foliage is a rich foil for those startling red flowers and a real focal point in your garden.
Height And Spread of Miscanthus Sinensis Red Chief
Eulalia Red Chief will reach a maximum height of 1.5 metres and spread across a metre within 2-5 years.
How Hardy Is Miscanthus Sinensis Red Chief
Very hardy in the UK if its roots are well-drained and it’s grown in full sun to partial shade. It copes with drought and is rarely affected by pests.
How To Use Miscanthus Sinensis Red Chief
Eulalia Red Chief suits informal low maintenance spaces, prairie planting, coastal gardens and hot architectural courtyards. Its movement, colour and height are endlessly versatile and it can be used in numerous ways including soil protection from spring to autumn.
It’s a great choice in sensory gardens, around dry seating areas, and wildlife-friendly spaces because birds take the feathery flower heads for their nests.
Flower arrangers enjoy the unusual shapes and long-lasting foliage in arrangements, and it will grow in a well-watered and fed container to brighten up a sunny balcony, deck or patio with its colour and movement.
If you have a dry spot and you’re not sure what to use, Eulalia Fire Chief is a reliable, hardy choice. Make sure to find it a nice sunny spot.
How To Care For Miscanus Sinensis Red Chief
Eulalia Fire Chief needs well-drained soil in a sunny spot to thrive. It will tolerate the majority of well-drained soils including chalk in a sheltered or exposed position. If you’re growing it in a container, be sure to raise it up on feet to ensure good drainage.
In early spring cut away dead foliage and stems to make way for new foliage and create good air circulation.
Water it well until established and mulch in early spring. In very wet and cold areas of the UK it may die down completely before re-emerging in spring. Cover the crown with a layer of mulch to protect it from the worst of our wet weather.
