Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus
Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus (also known as Japanese silver grass or Maiden Grass) is a clump forming ornamental grass that provides interest in the garden throughout all seasons. Elegant and handsome with its striking, arching variegated leaves that are light green with a distinctive white stripe down the centre. The leaves emerge from the central clump and have a lovely arching spread upwards and outwards. The light and airy finely textured foliage moves gently with even the slightest breeze.
Tiny reddish pink flowers appear in September which change into silvery plumes as the autumn advances and the long, elegant plumes last well into winter. The foliage takes on a golden hue in autumn and this colour lasts throughout the winter months.
In terms of size, Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus is one of the larger ornamental grasses reaching a height and spread of up to 2 or even 2.5 metres. Similar to Miscanthus Sinensis Gracillimus, this ornamental grass is substantial enough to be a standalone accent in the garden. In larger landscaped areas, it looks good when planted en masse. Use it also to add a softening effect when planted around a building.
Japanese silver grass or Maiden Grass will reach a maximum height and spread of 1.5 to 2.5 metres. It likes full sun and moist but well drained fertile soil. Many gardeners prefer to cut the previous season’s grass back in springtime, removing the brown foliage and allowing the new crisp green variegated foliage to emerge.
