These Malus Mokum Fruit Trees are trained as Full Standard trees. Full standard trees have a has single straight trunk with no branches for the first 1.8 metres and a full round crown. If you have a compact space, it’s best to choose this smaller standard form of crab apple tree.
Malus Mokum is a deciduous crab apple tree variety with burgundy foliage and round red crab apples. Left to its own devices, it can geet quite large so this neat standard form suits smaller gardens. Crab apples are native to the majority of Europe and Asia. They are named for the twisted or ‘crabbed’ appearance of the twigs and were a symbol of fertility in the medieval ages.
The cultivar Mokum was bred in Holland and named after the affectionate term for Amsterdam. It has deep-red almost purple foliage that emerges in early spring before the rich pink of its beautiful late spring blossom. The blossom is profuse, sweetly scented, and attracts many different species of pollinator. In summer foliage matures to rich bronze shades and then golden-yellow before falling to reveal numerous round, red crab apples that persist well into winter.
Crab apples are ornamental low-maintenance trees that are beneficial to wildlife. They deserve a space in every garden.
