Ideal for planting en masse, root balled Mokum Crab Apple should be planted in a hole twice the size of its root system, enriched with compost and thoroughly watered. Since these specimens are already fully trained, their crowns have the distinct square shape and can be used for creating an instant hedge or above fence screening. The distance between the trees should be circa 2.5 to 4.5 metres, but, if you want to create a lush privacy screen overnight, plant Pleached Malus Mokum trees with their crowns abutting.
The foliage unfolds purplish-red, providing a complementing backdrop for the rose pink blossoms that appear in the late spring. As the seasons progress, the leaves will turn to bronze in the summer and golden yellow in the fall. The flowers are followed by inedible fruit, deep red and round, not unlike cherries. The Mokum Crab Apple fruit persist well into the winter, offering interest when the most of the trees are completely bare. Same as all crab apple varieties, Pleached Malus Mokum is easy to grow and to care for. This tough cultivar will grow in any soil, including heavy clay, and tolerates dappled shade. For best performance, plant Mokum Crab Apple in a sunny spot and well-drained soil.
Named after the affectionate term for Amsterdam used by the city natives, this Holland-bred variety of crab apple is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. Even though Malus Mokum can withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero, it does not take kindly to strong winds, so it’s not recommended for coastal regions.
With its lively colours and exceptional resilience, Pleached Malus Mokum is a welcome addition to any garden. Elegant and highly-decorative, Mokum variety is ideal for cottage gardens and city gardens alike. Its rose-tinged foliage and blossoms offer romantic charm, and the pleached crown privacy and architectural value.
