Winter flowering Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty, or Honeysuckle Winter Beauty, is a very fragrant cultivar which lives up to its name by blooming through the winter producing white flowers. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit and will bring beauty to your winter garden!
Developed in Germany in the 1920’s, Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty is a shrub honeysuckle which is most striking during the winter months when the garden offers little else. It comes into bloom before Christmas, and continues to flower until early spring. Its tubular, creamy white flowers with yellow anthers have a sweet scent, and provide a pollen source for bees both late in the autumn and early in the spring. The flowering stems can be used in winter flower arrangements to bring their lovely fragrance into the house. Honeysuckle Winter Beauty’s semi-evergreen leaves often remain on the branches through the winter.
This tough winter bloomer is hardy throughout most of the UK, even in severe winters. Over a period of 10 to 20 years Honeysuckle Winter Beauty will reach its mature height and spread of 1.5-2.5 metres. If planting more than one, space 2 metres apart. Pruning is not recommended, as Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty is best left in its natural shape with graceful, arching branches. If a bush has become overgrown, cut back a third of the stems to the base to open up the plant.
Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty should be planted in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered or exposed position, in moist, well-drained soil. It benefits from a mulch of compost in early spring. Honeysuckle Winter Beauty does well in coastal locations, as it is tolerant of salt.
Plant this rare winter bloomer where you will be able to appreciate the delightful scent in winter time. Honeysuckle Winter Beauty is a good choice next to a pathway or near a door, where people passing by will catch its fragrance as they pass by. It grows well as a specimen towards the back of a mixed border, where it will be obscured by other plants in the warmer months when it is not flowering. Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty can also be trained on a wall or fence.
Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty is a delightful addition to any landscape. In return for little maintenance, this graceful shrub will perfume your garden in the middle of winter!
