Juniperus Pfitzeriana Old Gold or Juniper Old Gold, is an attractive, versatile, low growing evergreen golden juniper which has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is well-suited to gardens throughout the UK as a groundcover and accent shrub.
Introduced in 1958 as a variety developed from a shrub originally found in China, Juniperus Pfitzeriana Old Gold has become a garden favourite for its foliage which maintains its yellow hues year-round, only turning a richer golden-bronze in winter months. The fragrant, sharp, pointed leaves grow densely on the spreading branches, with the tips drooping slightly, creating an elegant appearance.
Hardy throughout the UK, Juniper Old Gold will slowly grow at a rate of 10-20 cm a year to a mature height of .5 to 1 metre and spread of 1.5- 2 metres in 20 to 50 years. Extremely low-maintenance, it requires no pruning at all. Plant specimens 1.8 metres apart, or 60-90 cm apart for hedging or groundcover.
Plant Juniperus Pfitzeriana Old Gold in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil with a preference for slightly acidic and sandy. For best colour plant in full sun. Once plants are established they are drought resistant, making an ideal low maintenance groundcover.
