Mahonias are treasured by gardeners as they flower brightly right through the winter when most other plants are dormant. The clusters of sweet scented, yellow flowers against the dark evergreen foliage is guaranteed to cheer up any garden in winter. In really cold, frosty weather the spikey leaves can take on a reddish hue.

The Mahonia X Media is a hybrid with particularly bright clusters of yellow flowers. Mahonia X Media Winter Sun in particular, is a handsome evergreen upright shrub with confident, glossy, dark green foliage, adding architectural interest all year round, as well as brightening up a dark corner in winter.

In the case of Mahonia X Media Winter Sun, the bright slender flower spikes push through around the beginning of November and carry on flowering right through to March. The flowers have a lovely fragrance similar to Lily of the valley. Once the flowers have done for the year, small, dark purple berries appear much to the delight of blackbirds and robins.

As with most Mahonias, Winter Sun grows well on any soil and is low in maintenance so you can happily leave them to get on with their job.
