Starting in the spring, the large, toothed, unusually dark leaves of Hydrangea macrophylla Dark Angel Purple unfurl, coloured dark green to copper to almost black. In summer, the flower heads emerge, with their outer florets of dark-red to dark-purple with cream centres surrounding the small inner purple florets. They create a spectacular contrast with the dark foliage. Hydrangea macrophylla Dark Angel Purple is a great choice for a cut flower, as the blooms will last up to 2 weeks in an arrangement.
Hydrangea macrophylla Dark Angel Purple combines its exotic beauty with considerable cold-hardiness, as it will survive in even severe winters through most of the UK. It will grow to a full height and spread of 1-1.5 metres in 5 to 10 years. Cut off faded flowerheads to prevent seed development and in late winter or early spring cut out a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new, more vigorous growth.
Hydrangea Dark Angel Purple can be successfully planted in sun or part-shade in an exposed or sheltered position. It is, however, particular about soil type, as are all hydrangeas, needing an acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained sand, clay or loamy soil with plenty of organic matter. It is not drought-tolerant, but will tolerate salt and is therefore suitable for coastal locations. It is generally disease-free.
With its beautiful flowers and leaves providing a 3-season show, you will want to place your Hydrangea Dark Angel Purple where it can be seen to best effect. With its smaller size, it is a natural for a container planting on a patio or in a courtyard, where its soil ph requirements can be easily accommodated and its beauty can be enjoyed.
Hydrangea macrophylla Dark Angel Purple also fits well into a mixed border, both for its foliage and flowers and can look stunning against a stone wall where its foliage and blooms will be showcased.
Hydrangea Dark Angel Purple is an excellent choice for both formal and informal gardens, in the city, country, or on the coast. It can grow happily in a container or courtyard or in a mixed border. This beautiful new hydrangea variety, with its striking dark leaves and brilliant flowers, will grace your garden for years to come.
