Hydrangea Macrophylla Dark Angel
A relatively new variety, this lacecap Hydrangea is deciduous and the magnificent flowers have many hues of pink, red and purple with cream coloured centres. The unusual deep bronze coloured foliage really set's off the colour of the blooms which absolutely cover the plants. From early to late summer, flowers absolutely cover the plant in a virtually nonstop display of blossoms. The stunning flowers are prolific and adored by floral artists for use in cut flower arrangements. As the blossoms age, the colours only intensify. The soil pH also has some bearing on flower colour.

Very easy to grow - Hydrangea Dark Angel needs plenty of water, especially if kept in containers or pots. The shrub grows well in neutral to slightly acidic well-drained soil. However, it prefers fertile, rich, moist soil for optimum growth. The plant does not like to dry out and does not tolerate drought well. For optimum growth, keep the shrub’s root system evenly moist but not overly waterlogged. In the early spring, Hydrangea Dark Angel will benefit from an application of aged compost or manure to provide it with ample nutrients. Although the Dark Angel will grow in full sun, please remember that Hydrangeas were originally woodland plants so they do prefer partial shade to full sun. They make a great understory shrub and grow will beneath trees or larger shrubs that provide dappled sunlight and some shelter from the heat of the afternoon sun.
Hydrangea Macrophylla Dark Angel grows in an upright habit.

The Hydrangea macrophylla does shine when grown in a pot and makes an ideal patio specimen. When growing the shrub in a container, make sure that it has adequate room for root growth. Also, use a potting mixture that is rich in organic matter for best growth results. A real stunner for the patio or roof garden, this flowering shrub is truly loved by the bees and other pollinators.

When fully grown, the shrub measures about 1 ½ metres tall and 1 ½ meters wide. It usually takes five to 10 years to reach its full growth potential. In the early spring, old spent flower heads can be pruned away and discarded. The small sturdy bush can also be lightly pruned at this time period if desired. Remove about a quarter to a third of the shrub’s shoots at the base. However, it does not require annual pruning to thrive. Any misplaced or diseased shoots should also be promptly cut away and discarded.

Highly ornamental, Hydrangea Macrophylla Dark Angle is a real showstopper for any garden setting with virtually non-stop flower production making it an exceptional focal point in any landscape. The abundant blossoms are also suitable as cut flowers or to create dried flower arrangements or other crafts.
