Spindle Emerald ‘n’ Gold is a dwarf, variegated variety of Euonymus Fortunei, grown for its attractive foliage and low growing hedge character with evergreen foliage. It is a clump forming, spreading low growing hedge or border plant and is considered one of the most versatile evergreen shrubs available. Emerald ‘n’ Gold is one of the most commonly sold Euonymus varieties with brightly golden, variegated leaves which change shade during cold weather to a pinkish-red hue, making this a great choice to add some colour to your garden space during the winter.
A low informal hedge, or a climber on a wall, you can encourage either of these shapes in your Spindle Emerald ‘n’ Gold. Suited for banks and slopes as a ground cover, or as a hedge or screen. It can also be planted and maintained as a border and stand-alone bed. Considered low maintenance, it also can be grown as a container plant.
Euonymus fortunei Emerald ‘n’ Gold is part of the Celastraceae Family, and an Award of Garden Merit winner by the Royal Horticultural Society. This dwarf evergreen shrub has broad, yellow-edged leaves, tinged pink during the winter months, and are variegated, making for a beautiful transitioning colour throughout the year.
In terms of aspect, Euonymus fortunei Emerald ‘n’ Gold is not too picky as long as it has reasonable sun exposure. It likes full sun or partial shade. It is considered hardy to minus 10-15 degrees, and is easily established and managed. Soil texture preferences include anything from well drained/light soils through to heavy clays. It likes its pH near neutral and soil that maintains its moisture. Even though it will tolerate damper soils, they should have good water movement and drainage as it doesn’t care for ‘wet feet’.
Spindle Emerald ‘n’ Gold grows to an ultimate height of 100 cm and spread of 150 cm and takes about 5-10 years to reach its full growth.
