Cercis Canadensis Lavender Twist Tree
Cercis Canadensis Lavender Twist is an ornamental variety of Cercis Canadensis (or Eastern Redbud) with a lovely weeping habit. It has become very popular in small gardens. The Lavender Twist tree produces a stunning burst of soft pink flowers each spring. Clusters of lavender-pink pea-sized blooms appear on twisted bare branches creating a fabulous contrast with the dark bare wood. In summer, its mid-green heart-shaped foliage bursts through and gradually turns a rich golden yellow in autumn. In winter the weeping downward-facing branches are an architectural addition.
Cercis Canadensis Lavender Twist Tree is a compact, slow-growing variety that is perfect for small areas. It will reach two metres by 1.5 metres over twenty years.
Lavender Twist Tree Hardiness Levels
The Lavender Twist Tree is a hardy ornamental specimen in all areas of the UK, and it’s easy to care for in almost all conditions. It prefers free-draining fertile soil but will tolerate most conditions despite its fragile appearance. While it will appreciate water in hot spells, particularly when young, but it’s not suitable for very water-logged conditions.
How To Use Cercis Canadensis Lavender Twist
Eastern Redbud Lavender Twist is a small ornamental tree with a big impact. It’s best grown as a specimen tree, its weeping habit adding structural interest. You can plant it in a garden border as part of a display, inset into a grassed lawn as a standout specimen, or place in a large well-fed and watered container. Container grown lavender twist trees remain smaller and give you the opportunity to move them around your garden throughout the season.
How To Care For a Lavender Twist Tree
Cercis Canadensis is a great choice for the low maintenance garden. It prefers a sunny situation, but will grow in a wide variety of setting and soils. Plant your lavender twist tree in a carefully thought-out space as they are difficult to transplant once established. Pruning is rarely required as it will hold its beautiful umbrella shape, but cut out any broken branches and crossed shoots in late autumn or winter. Before planting your lavender twist tree place a good layer of organic matter beneath the roots and mulch each year with the same to obtain the best and brightest blooms.
Cercis Canadensis makes a real structural statement and it’s a show-stopper in spring. Couple this with its hardy nature, year round interest and weeping habit, you have a low-maintenance top garden performer.
