Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens, also called Crataegus Persimilis Splendens or Hawthorn Prunifolia Splendens, is a cultivar of the native Hawthorn which not only provides spring flowers, but also a stunning autumn show of colour. This all-season beauty has earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
The Hawthorn is native to the UK, and the cultivar Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens has all of its most desirable characteristics. The glossy, dark green oval leaves are complemented in May by clusters of small, fragrant white flowers which cover the tree, attracting bees and butterflies. The leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold with touches of purple in autumn accented by the bright red berries which will draw birds to the garden into the early winter. The thorny, dense crown provides excellent shelter for birds throughout the year.
Fully hardy in even the most severe climates, Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens will grow to 5 metres high by 4 metres wide in 20 years, reaching a mature height and spread of 8 metres in 50 years. Little or no pruning is required to maintain its natural dome-shaped crown.
Plant Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. This tough native is very hardy and will thrive in a wide variety of growing conditions. Hawthorn Prunifolia Splendens is very tolerant of sea winds, so is a good choice in coastal regions, and is highly tolerant of pollution, making it ideal for city gardens. Rabbits will eat young hawthorn bark, so protect the stems from damage.
Hawthorn Prunifolia Splendens can be grown as a specimen tree in a lawn, where its spring blossoms and autumn foliage will make it an attractive focal point. Planted next to a patio, it will provide fragrant spring flowers, summer shade, and a magnificent autumn show. A row of Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens would make an effective boundary hedge, or a group on a larger property would make a big statement in blossom time as well as in the autumn. It would also be effective as part of a mixed hedge.
Crataegus Persimilis Prunifolia Splendens is a hardy small tree which will adapt to a variety of difficult growing conditions, while at the same time providing a brilliant show of autumn colour!
