Not surprisingly, given its name Mexican Orange Blossom, this shrub is native to the south-west region of North America. Choisya dewitteana White Dazzler is a new variety, combining all the hardiness of the original with extended flowering periods and a compact size. The narrow, aromatic dark green leaves last all year round, providing reliable foliage through the winter. In April, pinkish buds open to fragrant star-shaped white flowers with yellow centres in bountiful clusters, and very often in early autumn the flowers return lingering into November. Butterflies and bees will flock to your garden to feast on the nectar!
Hardy throughout most of the UK, low-growing Choisya dewitteana White Dazzler will grow into a dome-shaped shrub with a height and spread of 0.5-1 metre in 2 to 5 years, reaching an eventual height of just 1.5 metres in 10 years. Prune in early spring to remove dead or damaged branches. If planting in a group or row, space plants 1.5 metres apart.
Choisya White Dazzler should be planted in full sun in a sheltered position with a south, east or west-facing aspect in any well-drained soil. Once established they are drought-tolerant. Tolerant of salt, it is suitable for use in coastal areas, and as it is also pollution-tolerant, it will do well in city gardens. It is a good choice for country gardeners, too, since it is deer-resistant. Choisya dewitteana White Dazzler is generally disease-free.
This compact evergreen is an ideal choice for container growing although some winter protection may be needed in colder regions. A sheltered spot in a sunny courtyard would be a perfect location for this freely flowering evergreen shrub. As part of a mixed border, Choisya dewitteana White Dazzler will contribute its own blooms in both spring and autumn, and then provide structure and colour in the winter garden. It also makes an excellent foundation planting along a south wall.
Choisya dewitteana White Dazzler has so much to recommend it: low-maintenance evergreen foliage, fragrant flowers not once, but twice a year, and a neat, compact shape suitable for even the smallest of gardens!
