Phyllostachys Nigra - Black Bamboo

Black Bamboo or Phyllostachys Nigra is a popular choice from the range of Bamboos at Paramount Plants. This dramatic tall clump forming bamboo has very striking, beautiful black stems and is easily maintained.  An evergreen variety, Black Bamboo will retain its attractive looks all throughout the year, making it a great choice for screening and hedging purposes. The new growth is green at first but as they mature, the arching canes (culms) get the distinct black colour that give this bamboo variety its name. The foliage is narrow and lanceolate with leaves measuring up to 12 cm in length.

Height and Spread of Phyllostachys Nigra
Vigorous and fast-growing, Black Bamboo will quickly reach its ultimate height and spread of 2.5 to 4 metres.

How Hardy is Phyllostachys Nigra
Native to southern China but fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this bamboo variety can easily withstand temperatures up to -15 degrees Celsius. TBlack Bamboo is considered to be virtually disease and pest free.

Phyllostachys Nigra is a hardy evergreen which is ideal as an ornamental plant in an exotic garden design scheme, or is very useful as an elegant bamboo hedge with its light green leaves and contrasting black stems. For these attributes Black Bamboo plants make a modern style hedge and are great when used as evergreen screening plants. 

How To Care For Phyllostachys Nigra
Undemanding and easy to grow and care for, Black Bamboo thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soils rich in hummus. It will do well in full sun to dappled shade in a location that is sheltered from harsh drying winds.  NOTE: This plant has RHS Award of Garden Merit
