Berberis Thunbergii F Atropurpurea Harlequin is a deciduous shrub that will add brillant colour to the garden. This beautiful low growing Berberis specimen is a compact shrub with deep rounded purple-cream-pink leaves. The small pale yellows flowers emerge in early spring and are followed by dark red berries in autum.
The Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea (or red leaf Japanese barberry) culitvars represent the red / purple leave varieties of berberis and are prized for their striking foliage. The Harlequin variety likes full sun which brings out the best purple colour of its foliage but it will also grow in partial shade. Generally, Berberis will cope well in any well drained fertile soils and are very hardy.
A lovely compact grower, Berberis Thunbergii F Atropurpurea Harlequin will not get overly large, reaching a maximum height and spread of 1m.
Caution, although extremly attractive to look at, berberis berries can cause an upset stomach if eaten. They are however, adored by birds and other wildlife.
