Abelias are native to eastern Asia from Japan to the Himalayas, but the cultivar Hopleys originated as a naturally occurring sport in Hopleys nursery in the 1990s. Abelia Hopleys’ semi-evergreen foliage is green with variegated yellow edges. The foliage emerges with strong yellow margins that gradually fade over the summer months to a pretty pale yellow. Flowers emerge in spring as dark pink buds, opening to trumpet-shaped white blooms that are gently fragrant and draw in native pollinators. This is a long-flowering shrub that blooms from spring to autumn in the right conditions.

It suits cottage gardens and low maintenance gardens that want to attract wildlife. You can grow Abelia Hopleys in a large well-watered and fed container as long as it doesn’t dry out.
How To Care For Abelia Grandiflora Hopleys
Abelia Hopleys can be left to its own devices once established. It will grow in the majority of situations including chalk and full sun. Choose a sunny, sheltered position for the best flowering display and water well until established. If allowed to dry out Abelia Hopleys may lose its flowers.
You don’t need to prune, but to maintain the size or shape trim back branches in the dormant months. A thick layer of mulch in spring traps moisture and provides nutrients for the growing season.
