Acer Shirasawanum are known as the Full Moon Maples and are native to Japan. It’s a popular species of acer for its sharply lobed but rounded foliage and spectacular colour range. The Shirasawa’s Maple Moonrise cultivar was bred in the United States and is noted for its neat shape and dramatic colour changes. This is a vivid acer with 5-7 lobed leaves that emerge warm red in spring and mature to clean yellow-green through the summer alongside tiny inconspicuous flowers that turn into winged seed pods. The new late spring red foliage contrasts nicely with its matured green shades for a warm pop of eye-catching colour. Autumn brings a mix of warm yellow, deep orange, and fiery red shades that fall with the frosts to reveal ornamental green-brown stems.
Moonrise is known for its myriad of colours which although bright are subtle tones that do not appear garish or overbearing. This is an excellent multi-hued acer that suits most size gardens and doesn’t outgrow its welcome. It is particularily striking when its hues of yellow, red and green are present all at one time.
Height And Spread Acer Shirasawanum Moonrise
Shirasawa’s Maple Moonrise has a loosely rounded habit and remains compact at a maximum height and spread of 3 metres over 10 years.
How Hardy Is Acer Shirasawanum Moonrise
If the roots are well-drained Acer Moonrise can withstand minus temperatures. Although it is more resistant to leaf scorch than other acers, a position sheltered from harsh winds is best.
How To Use Acer Shirasawanum Moonrise
The spectacular colours and small growth habit of Shirasawa’s Maple Moonrise make it a perfect specimen acer for plant containers on a bare patio, decking, or on a balcony.
It also suits a rockery, Japanese garden, leafy low maintenance border or an urban courtyard and makes an excellent gift for acer lovers.
How To Care For Acer Shirasawanum Moonrise
Shirasawa’s Maple Moonrise is easy to grow and likes moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Harsh winds and strong midday sun can scorch the foliage so a sheltered spot is best.
Water well in hot spells and mulch the roots in spring for the best foliage displays and again in autumn to protect the roots against drying out.
Unless the branches are damaged there is no need to prune this acer as it naturally holds an open vase shape and doesn’t grow too large. Crossed or damaged branches can be removed in the dormant months.
