Acer Shirasawanum Jordan is deciduous yellow-leafed Japanese Maple tree with striped bark. It’s a pretty specimen tree in courtyards or architectural borders.
Acer Shirasawanum, sometimes referred to as the Full Moon Maple, is native to Japan. It’s a popular species of Japanese Acer and many cultivars exist. The ‘Jordan’ cultivar was bred in Italy and named after the nursey owner ‘Giordano’.
Jordan is an outstanding Golden Leaved Japanese Maple and one of the best yellow-leaved varieties on the market. It has springtime foliage that emerges bright yellow with orange borders on its bare branches. Leaves unfurl to slightly lobed but almost circular leaves which give it the ‘full moon maple’ name. In summer, leaves turn a clean lime-yellow and mature to bright red with little red seed heads in autumn. When the foliage falls it reveals grey bark with vertical white stripes.
This is an excellent yellow-foliage Japanese Acer that suits most size gardens and doesn’t outgrow its welcome.
Height and Spread of Acer Shirasawanum Jordan
Golden Leaved Japanese Maple Jordan has vigorous upright growth and reaches a maximum height of 3-4 metres and spreads over 2-3 metres.
How Hardy Is Acer Shirasawanum Jordan
As with most acers, Jordan is hardy enough to withstand freezing UK winters if the roots are well-drained.
How To Use Acer Shirasawanum Jordan
A great addition to sheltered flower borders, Japanese-styled gardens and woodland gardens, Golden Leaved Japanese Maple Jordan holds its own among brightly shaded foliage plants pairing well with red-foliage acers such as Little Red or orange foliage acers such as Acer Shirasawanum Autumn Moon.
Jordan suits a Japanese-style garden and rock gardens as well as low maintenance spaces in country-style borders. It’s a striking specimen tree in an urban courtyard too.
How To Care For Acer Shirasawanum Jordan
The golden yellow acer will tolerate the majority of moist but well-drained soil types and is best planted with protection from cold drying winds and harsh sun. It can tolerate some sunshine, but the morning sun is best avoided.
No pruning is required, but dead or damaged branches can be removed in winter. Add a thick layer of mulch to the base in early spring and water well until established.
