Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty Crab Apple
Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty, a variety of Japanese crab apple, is a very small deciduous tree. With a semi-weeping habit and profusion of spring blossoms, this elegant fruiting tree is an excellent choice for a specimen tree, particularly in gardens where space is limited.
Completely covering the overarching branches, masses of white blossoms open from pink buds in mid-spring. The blooms give way to a good crop of tiny crab apples in the autumn, around 1 centimetre in size. During the flowering season, foliage is often overlooked, but the deeply serrated leaves are quite decorative in themselves. The dark green foliage gives the crown a light, delicate appearance, and turns to vivid yellow shades in the autumn, complementing the yellow and reddish berry-like, stalked fruit.
Height and Spread of Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty
Keeping its petite size as it matures, Crab Apple Brouwers Beauty rarely exceeds 3 metres in height, even when fully mature. The spread of its vase-shaped crown is up to 1.5 metres in width.
How Hardy Is Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty
Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this cultivar can be grown in exposed and sheltered sites without fear of frost or wind damage. Tolerant of urban pollution and paving, Crab Apple Brouwers Beauty is a good candidate for city gardens.
How To Use Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty
Highly-decorative and compact, Crab Apple Brouwers Beauty is at its best when grown as a focus of interest in small gardens. From the abundance of pale pink blossoms in the spring to attractive autumn colour and fruit, this deciduous tree offers multiple seasons of interest. But the striking appearance is not the only quality of this cultivar. Its scented flowers provide pollen for beneficial insect, and the clusters of tiny berry-like fruit are a favourite with birds and wildlife.
Self-fertile, this cultivar can serve as a pollination partner to mid-season apple varieties.
How To Care For Malus Toringo Brouwers Beauty
For optimal performance in the garden, choose soils that are rich in nutrients, and moist but well-drained. This tree will not fare well in heavily wet soils. Although tolerant of dappled shade, this Japanese crab variety blooms more prolifically if planted in full sun.
Easy to grow and to care for, this variety is considered to be a low maintenance tree. To prevent fungal or bacterial tree diseases, routinely remove any dead, damaged, or congested stems.
