Arctic Jade is a Jack Frost maple hybrid bred by the American Iseli nursey who are also well known for their conifer selections. The Jack Frost series is bred especially hardy for cold conditions and they have survived temperatures as low as -30 in field tests. These maples are a cross between Acer Pseudosieboldianum (False Siebolds Maple) for hardiness and Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple) for its refined branch structure and foliage colour.
False Siebolds Maple Arctic Jade is one of the tallest Jack Frost maples at six metres alongside North Wind. Ice Dragon is the smallest selection reaching only three metres in height.
Arctic Jade has very large leaves (larger than North Wind’s) that are deeply serrated. They emerge fresh green in spring, mature to mid green and then burst into fiery orange and red for autumn. When the leaves fall, they reveal its handsome branching structure inherited from its Japanese Maple parent.
Height and Spread of Acer Pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade
False Siebolds Maple Arctic Jade reaches a maximum height of six metres and spreads over five metres.
How Hardy Is Acer Pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade
Arctic Jade will withstand UK winters if its roots are well drained. It will cope with northerly areas and exposed positions.
How To Use Acer Pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade
It’s best used as a handsome specimen tree or positioned in a larger landscape where it brings attractive shapes and colours from spring to autumn. Because it’s so hardy, Arctic Jade can cope with exposed sites that other maples and acers can’t survive in.
How To Care For Acer Pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade
The Jack Frost series of hardy maples are very easy to care for and need little attention once they’ve established.
Choose an exposed or sheltered spot in reasonably fertile soil with full sun or part shade, and mulch around its roots in early spring to provide extra nutrients and trap moisture. Full sun will encourage the brightest foliage display.
Pruning isn’t necessary, but Arctic Jade will need plenty of water until you spot new growth so it can lay down strong new roots.
