Crataegus Laevigata Paul's Scarlet - Red Hawthorn
Is a really beautiful variety of Hawthorn tree, this striking scarlet red flowering variety, produces masses of double red flowers in late Spring, early summer.
Also known as the Red Hawthorn tree, it will grow in almost any soil conditions including wet heavy soils and chalky soils and copes with very windy exposed sites and coastal locations.
The Midland Hawthorn is an excellent tree for town gardens, it can be kept to a smaller size by pruning if required and Hawthorn Paul's Scarlet is also a very effective hedging plant, its dense habit and thorny branches effectively protect against intruders, plant around your boundary for excellent protection.
In Ireland this Hawthorn is known as Sceach Gheal it is virtually indistinguishable from the more common white Hawthorn, that is until the fabulous display of blooms appear in May.
Paul's Scarlet flowers with great timing - just when all the Magnolias and Cherry Blossom are at an end Crataegus Laevigata bursts into flower, firmly announcing the beginning of summer.
