Acer Pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon (False Siebolds Maple) is a new hybrid variety of deciduous hardy maple from the Iseli nursey’s Jack Frost collection. Ice Dragon is broader than its height and has brilliantly coloured serrated palmate foliage from spring to late autumn.
Ice Dragon is one in a series of three new hardy maples bred by the Iseli Nursery in the USA who are well known for their unusual conifers. The Jack Frost series comprises Ice Dragon, North Wind and Arctic Jade all of which are crosses between Acer Pseudosieboldianum (False Siebolds Maple) for their tolerance of harsh cold conditions and Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple) for their handsome spreading habits & form and stunning foliage.
False Siebolds Maple Ice Dragon is a small-sized garden maple that spreads wider than its height. It has a stunning cascading habit with deeply serrated leaves that open orange in spring, mature to green over summer, and turn vivid brilliant yellow, orange and red in autumn.
This is an excellent small maple with vibrant autumn colour for compact gardens and for landscaping in exposed spots.
Height and Spread of Acer Pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon
False Siebolds Maple Ice Dragon reaches a maximum three metres tall by five metres wide.
How Hardy is Acer Pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon
Bred for hardiness in extreme conditions, Ice Dragon has tolerated minus 30 degrees in US field tests. It’s more than capable of coping with British winters if its roots are well drained.
How To Use Acer Pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon
Ice Dragon is excellent in an exposed spot because it brings spring to autumn colour where other trees can’t survive including Northern areas. Its small stature suits compact gardens and it provides interest in larger landscapes too.
How To Care For Acer Pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon
Garden maples are very easy to care for and need little attention once they’ve established. Plant Ice Dragon in a well-drained position with full sun or part shade. As long as the soil is reasonably fertile it will cope with most situations.
Pruning isn’t required, but a thick layer of organic mulch around its roots in early spring will help bring out its fiery colours. Water it well until you see new growth because all newly planted trees need lots to drink in order to establish their roots.
