Yew or Taxus Baccata is the perfect choice for a neat trimmed hedge. A coniferous bushy plant which grows well in most soil conditions. With the fashionable focus on contemporary minimalism and formal designs, taxus baccata is the go-to plant for many garden designers.
Yew (Taxus Baccata) is luscious and dense. Its dark evergreen leaves providing colour and texture throughout the winter months. Native Yew is a wildlife-friendly hedging and is popular with birds for its berries and protective cover. It is slow growing so minimal maintenance is required. Consider buying larger plants (as larges as your budget allows) to avoid waiting too long for the hedge to establish. During the winter months Taxus hedging is available as rootballed plants here at Paramount. Yew can grow to over 12m in its lifetime, but as mentioned above, it is very slow growing so is very easy to control.
Taxus is also available as very large plants and it lends itself very well to being clipped as topiary - Taxus Spirals. See also other varieties of taxus available at Paramount Plants. The attractive Yew Hedge featured in the image below (the yew is the tallest part of this hedge) shows the hedge has been tiered to incorporate a hedge of Yew, Holly and then underplanted with an edging of Pines.
