Prunus Nipponica Brillant Kurile Cherry
Prunus Nipponica Brillant is a small deciduous white-flowering cherry tree that’s perfect for small spaces. The full botanical name for this little cherry tree is rather a mouthful - Prunus Nipponica var. Kurilensis Brillant.
Prunus Nipponica Brillant commonly called Kurile Cherry Brilliant, blossoms in early spring on bare branches. Its star-shaped single flowers are bright snowy white with a tinge of palest pink in the centre. Blossom clusters attractively along the length of its bushy branches, and in some cases will mature into small purple fruits. As the flowers begin to fade and the fruits appear, coarsely-toothed copper-tinged foliage emerges before maturing into mid-green for the summer months. During autumn foliage turns bright shades of orange and red. This is a good choice of flowering cherry for seasonal interest and low maintenance gardens.
Height And Spread of Prunus Nipponica Brillant
Kurile Cherry Brilliant is an upright, dense and bushy cherry tree that will reach a maximum height of 4 metres and a width of 2.5 metres over 10-20 years. You can restrict its growth with a yearly prune in late winter.
How Hardy Is Prunus Nipponica Brillant
Kurile Cherry Brilliant is very hardy and will withstand sub-zero temperatures if its roots are well-drained. It should be planted in a sheltered position to protect its blossom from strong winds. Once established it is drought-resistant and fairly resistant to pests.
How to Use Prunus Nipponica Brillant
This is an excellent specimen tree for all size gardens.
Kurile Cherry Brilliant brings height and colour to a low maintenance flower border and grows well against a fence line where its blossom is protected.
Ideal as an ornamental tree in smaller gardens it’ll take up little space and can even be grown in a large well-watered and fed container on the patio.
This white cherry tree is lovely in a front garden to cheer up dull spring and autumn mornings, and it’s a real attraction for pollinating insects residing in wildlife-friendly spaces.
How to Care For Prunus Nipponica Brillant
Kurile Cherry Brilliant is hardy and will grow in the majority of well-drained soils but it’s not keen on chalky conditions. Plant yours in full sun or partial shade as the sun encourages good blossom displays, and water well until it is thoroughly established. A thick layer of well-rotted mulch around the base each year encourages healthy growth.
You don’t need to prune this white flowering cherry but you can restrict its height by cutting back or removing branches before the blossom buds appear in early spring.
