A great choice both for beginners and experienced gardeners, this variety will add a burst of colour to your garden in the late spring, and attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. Good candidate for mass planting and mixed shrub borders. This is considered a small shrub that should not exceed 1.5 metres.
The upright, rounded habit of this shrub consists of dark green, oval leaves. The simple foliage provides a perfect backdrop to this variety’s most attractive feature: vivid red blossoms. The scarlet tubular flowers appear in late spring and early summer, enveloping the entire plant in shades of deep pink and bright red. Unlike most many flowering cultivars, the blossoms of this variety retain its vibrant colour until they drop.
Easy to grow and to care for, this attractive shrub can be successfully grown in moist, well-drained fertile soils, regardless of the type. Tolerates partial shade but prefers full sun, which encourages better flowering and foliage colour. Considered pest and disease free, there is little that bothers this showy cultivar. Its good constitution and performance in British garden, as well as its decorative looks, earned Red Prince an Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.
An all-around reliable performer, Weigela Red Prince can survive even if the winter temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero. Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this flowering, deciduous shrub does not mind frost or strong winds, and it can flourish both in exposed and sheltered locations.
With a bushy, oval to rounded habit, this shrub has an elegant natural form. To maintain its attractive shape, prune immediately after the flowering season ends, removing all dead, damaged and congested shoots from the shrub. Suitable for renovating as it responds well to hard pruning. Staying compact as it matures, this cultivar will grow to be 1 to 1.5 metres both high and across.
Low-maintenance, resilient and showy, Weigela Red Prince is a welcome addition to any garden in need of a spring interest. The profuse display of scarlet, funnel-shaped blossoms and a rounded habit make this shrub a good candidate for a specimen plant or a mixed shrub border, where it adds texture and a dash of colour. Plant it en masse for a stunning flowering border.
