Wisteria Floribunda Burford or Japanese Wisteria Burford
Climber Wisteria Floribunda Burford, also called Japanese Wisteria Burford has a Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) prestigious Award of Garden Merit. A deciduous climber, Wisteria Burford is a real show stopper. In spring, it produces masses of pale lilac-blue flowers that dangle in clusters that measure 10 centimetres or more in length. The dazzling flower clusters are comprised of pea-shaped blooms that sport shades of deep purple, lavender and white. They each have a large yellow spot on the throat that stands out in stark contrast to the varying purple colours on the petals. The huge flower clusters draw butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to the garden in abundance. The flower clusters have a sweet fragrance that wafts on the air throughout the entire garden.
After flowering, Japanese Wisteria Burford produces bean-like seed pods. The pods ripen throughout the summer and persist on the vine into the fall months to create visual interest.
In the spring the foliage emerges a deep bronze. The dense pinnate leaves then turn a brilliant green as spring turns into summer. In the autumn, the foliage starts to change to a brilliant yellow hue before falling from the vine.
The Wisteria Floribunda Burford vine grows in a clockwise twining pattern to a height of 7.5 meters. It grows well against walls, fences, trellis, pergolas and arbours. It can also be trained as a free-standing plant providing it is given sturdy support. Place the vine anywhere in the garden where you can enjoy the pleasing fragrance of the vine’s flowers and the blossoms eye-catching beauty. It grows well in full sun or partial shade. However, it will produce more and larger flowers when placed in full sun.
Choose a planting location with moderately moist soil that is well-draining. Wisteria Floribunda Burford adores a planting site that is high in organic content. Keep the soil moist during the vine’s first year so it can establish a strong root system. After the first year, the vine is moderately drought tolerant.
Regular pruning will help control the Wisteria Burford’s shape and growth. Trimming the vine will also encourage new growth and more flower production.
Wisteria Floribunda Burford is a real showstopper in any garden setting. Its spring flower production is truly outstanding. Plant it in an area of the garden where everyone can freely enjoy its beauty.
