Thuja Occidentalis Yellow Ribbon is an evergreen conifer with a neat, upright habit and pale golden-green foliage. It suits borders and hedging.
Thuja Occidentalis is a Northern White Cedar that’s native to North-Eastern America. Because White Cedar takes so well to breeding there are many excellent cultivars including Yellow Ribbon that originated in the Netherlands in the 1980s. White Cedar Yellow Ribbon is rightly popular for its neat size and shape. It rarely reaches more than 3 metres tall, which is small compared to the 30 metre plus varieties of some White Cedars.
Sprays of tiny scale-like leaves emerge yellow-orange in spring before maturing to bright yellowy-green in summer. In autumn you may see small cones. Eye-catching and neat all-year-round Thuja Yellow Ribbon, also known as the American Arborvitae, is a good choice for small instant hedges or as a columnar, pot-grown statement.
Height And Spread of Thuja Occidentalis Yellow Ribbon
A small version of White Cedar, Yellow Ribbon reaches a maximum height of 3 metres and spreads over 1-2 metres in a conical ‘Christmas tree’ form.
How Hardy Is Thuja Occidentalis Yellow Ribbon
Thuja is extremely hardy and Yellow Ribbon is no exception. If well drained it can withstand the coldest of freezing winters and is rarely bothered by pests.
How To Use Thuja Occidentalis
Yellow Ribbon is an excellent hedging choice or for evergreen screening because it’s bushy enough to create privacy but doesn’t grow too large. It withstands pollution, so it’s a good front garden choice too.
The yellow foliage helps break up a sea of dark green and it can be grown in a large, well-watered container to enhance a patio or balcony.
Thuja also creates shelter in wildlife gardens and no fuss colour in low maintenance spaces.
How To Care For Thuja Occidentalis Yellow Ribbon
Plant Thuja Yellow Ribbon in moist but well-drained soil of any type. It likes a sunny spot, but will tolerate partial shade too. Yellow Ribbon is hardy enough to withstand exposed spaces, coastal sprays, and pollution.
Plant it in a hole three times bigger than the root ball with plenty of well-rotted organic matter and water well until established. Prune in early spring before new growth appears to maintain height and spread if necessary.
