These include Dwarf Golden Oriental Thuja and Platycladus Orientalis Aurea Nana and Thuja orientalis Miller's Gold. It is an attractive, hardy evergreen conifer tree with golden yellow foliage turning old-gold in the winter.
Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana first starts out in a conical shape but later features an irregular ovoid that that has dips and swirls that many find exceptionally eye-catching. The evergreen conifer boasts yellow-green foliage that is brightest at the tips and in the winter the foliage shading turns an old-gold hue. Aurea Nana’s rather thin scale foliage gives it a puffy appearance from a distance. If the foliage of the shrub is crushed it emits a smell that is reminiscent of pineapples. When fully grown at 10 to 20 years of age this dwarf conifer typically stands at only 4 meters in height with a spread of 1 meter. Its short stature makes it a favoured border plant, walkway companion or foundation shrub.
A native of China and Korea, Dwarf Golden Oriental Thuja grows best when planted in full sunlight in a location that offers some protection from drying winds. The planting site should have good air circulation. This little conifer isn’t too picky about soil and will grow in neutral or slightly acidic conditions. The soil of the planting site should be well-draining because the shrub does not tolerate waterlogged roots. For best growth results, keep the Aurea Nana moist but not overly saturated. Once established, the tough little shrub can tolerate periods of drought.
The Dwarf Golden Oriental Thuja is coveted because of its carefree requirements. It needs no pruning to grow and maintain its shape. No matter where in the garden you opt to plant Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana, its unique colouration and year round interest are sure to please. Try planting Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana against a backdrop of emerald green evergreens to truly showcase its yellow-gold highlights. Another constrasting option is to combine it with a ground-cover conifer such as Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet.
TIP: Water thoroughly before planting.
