Thuja Orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea is a neat conical conifer with beautiful mid green foliage and new golden coloured growth. It makes an excellent evergreen hedging plant but is also superb when planted as individual specimen trees.
Thuja orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea belongs to the cypress family Cupressaceae. It is native to most of north western China. It has naturalized throughout East Asia, Korea, Japan, India, and northern Iran. In its homeland of China, Thuja Orientalis is associated with vitality and long life.
Thuja orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea can attain a height of up to 10 meters and a width of approximately 1.5 meters when fully grown. The evergreen conifer makes an excellent hedging plant and is also superb as an individual specimen tree. It also grows well in a large container on a patio. It requires very little maintenance and looks striking year round.
The scale-like foliage of Thuja orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea emerges a bright mint green. As the branches mature they take on golden colouration that stands out in stark contrast against the green making it an eye-catching focal point in any landscape. During the winter months, it is not uncommon for the scales to also take on a unique reddish hue. The layered growth pattern of the branches gives it a unique ripple effect.
Thuja Orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea grows well in moist well drained fertile soil in an open sunny position and requires minimal pruning. It grows best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. The planting location should provide some protection from any dry, cold winds. It is hardy to -24 degrees Celsius. Once established, it requires very little care to thrive. After the first year of growth, it can withstand brief periods of drought well. It grows at a relatively slow rate and requires no pruning. If desired it can be trimmed lightly in the spring or late summer months to maintain its growth or shape.
Thuja orientalis Pyramidalis Aurea is used for hedging, evergreen privacy screening or as a beautiful standalone specimen tree. Its outstanding year round colouration, ease of care and hardiness make it an excellent addition to any landscape.
