The sorbus family of trees, commonly known as the rowan or mountain ash, is a large and horticulturally significant genus which encompasses dwarf shrubs to large trees. They tend to be hardy with attractive flowers, but are in the main, grown for their ornamental foliage and colourful fruit, which provide excellent autumn colour.
Sorbus Joseph Rock, a variety of Mountain Ash, is an outstanding deciduous small tree up to 9 metres or more in height with an erect compact head of branches. It provides year-round interest with flowers in spring, attractive foliage in summer and yellow berries in autumn.
Clusters of small white flowers are produced in spring. This is followed by glossy green foliage. The leaves are pinnate with 15 to 19 narrowly oblong sharply toothed leaflets, turning to shades of red, orange, copper and purple in autumn. The rich autumn shades provide a striking backdrop for the clusters of rounded berry-like fruits, which emerge creamy-yellow. As they mature, the berries deepening to golden-yellow. The fruits remain on the branches into winter, long after the all the leaves have fallen. The berries are very popular with birds.
The origins of this particular variety of rowan are not known but are possibly Chinese.
